WHAT IS THE DE BEQUE WILD HORSE COUNCIL?
A non-profit
organization consisting of a group of people that have donated their time
and energy with a two-fold purpose.
The
first is the DeBeque Wild Horse Days.
This is a once a year three day event that has only been in effect
for seven years.
Trained
mustangs are in our parade and we have Mustang Alley where the public can
see and be informed about these beautiful animals.
DeBeque
is the only Wild Horse Sanctuary City in the west. At one time DeBeque was where the wild
horses were rounded up and sold. We
have a mustang statue at the Town Square to honor these animals. The only way this event happens is by
donations. These donations pay for
ribbons, entertainment, advertising, office supplies and prizes. We have no paid employees.
Our
long-term goal is to develop the land, which the Town of DeBeque owns,
south of the Colorado River, into an area, which would have corrals,
parking, and recreational space.
This would be available for the BLM and others working with the Wild
Horses on the range.
The
Town of DeBeque plans to have a rodeo grounds with trails for walking, bird
watching and perhaps a dock on the river.
All of this will be a perfect place to inform the public about the
Wild Horse’s and Burros.
As
times change the mustang has changed also.
With the help of the BLM, Friends of the Mustangs, DeBeque Wild
Horse Council and other organizations such as these, we can all be involved
in these changes. These
organizations work hard to inform the public and make sure these Wild
Horses and Burros are protected and cared for.
All
of this takes time and money. Please
help us achieve our goals by supporting events such as DeBeque Wild Horse
Days and the Council. If you have
any questions please feel free to call.
